She was awarded the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS) doctoral scholarship for her PhD on the experiences of black medical specialists in training in the Western Cape. Her research interests include decoloniality and race politics in higher education, the scholarship of teaching and learning, decolonisation in psychology, intersectional feminism, and alcohol and substance use disorders in people living with HIV (PLWH).. She is a member of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), the International Consortium of Universities for Drug Demand Reduction (ICUDDR) and the African Global Mental Health Institution (AGMHI). Nokulunga is the PhD programme coordinator and coordinates the work-integrated learning component of the clinical master’s programme. She also engages in postgraduate supervision, both clinical (supervising clinical and intern psychologists) and research.
